I remember the moment I heard that first cry - it was the sweetest sound I have ever heard in my life. They told H to stand up and he took a couple of pics, then the peds team took him to the side to clean him off and do the apgar test. I craned my neck around to try and see them. Then they called H to come over to take some pics, but the anesthesiologist quickly called him back because baby girl was making her debut! It took a moment and then I heard her squack! I swear she's my little bird, she makes the cutest bird like sounds that melt my heart. They did the same thing, H took a pic and the peds took her aside. I lay there just hoping I would get a chance to see them before they'd be whisked away to the NICU, knowing there was a very good chance that I might not. Then the peds doc brings L over and I got to see him and give him a kiss, it was incredible to meet my son. Then she took him back and brought E over and I got to give her a kiss. I will cherish these moments forever. I may not have got the labour and delivery I wanted, I may not have got my skin to skin, I may not have been able to snuggle them and BF right away - but at least I got to meet them before they went to the NICU and I went to recovery.
My mom came to be with me in recovery while I sent H to watch over the babies. He texted updates and pics to me. It was so hard not to be with them, but thank goodness for modern technology or I would have gone crazy! I spent about 2hrs in recovery, then back to my room. It was about to be a long night of wishing I was with them and counting the hours until that happened. The next morning I had mores tests done and every moment felt like eternity waiting to get to the NICU. When I finally got there, it was amazing to finally get to be with them. We got to do our skin to skin and that was probably one of the very best moments of my life. Holding E so close to me, I could feel my heart and soul just filling with more love than I could have ever imagined. That was my daughter! Then to look over and see my husband holding his son - be still my heart, I just couldn't be any happier.
The next couple of days were rough. My preeclampsia worsened, my potassium levels were a mess, they were concerned about my kidneys, my BP was all over the place - it was kind of awful. I felt awful and it was hard to spend as much time in the NICU as I wanted because they kept needing me for more tests. After a couple of days, things finally started to improve, with my health, and with how much time I could spend with the babies. I was finally on the road to recovery.
L&E are amazing. They have been breathing on their own since birth (yay for longer cooking and steroids!). They had a little jaundice, which wasn't a huge deal and is so common, but it meant they had to be under the phototherapy lights all day, which made it hard to snuggle them. I also started pumping right away, but it was so tough trying to recover from my health issues and the c section, plus the fact I'm pumping and can't actually BF. I'm not even going to get into the two least helpful NICU nurses who basically gave me grief about not producing enough milk on day 3 and how my babies are hungry and I need to pump exactly ever 3 hours so I'm doing it wrong. It was all the stuff a newly post partum mom with babies in the NICU wants to hear. Let's leave it there.
Anyways, today, they are 9 days old and doing amazing! They have both now surpassed their birth weights, (E was 3lbs,7oz, and L was 3lbs,14oz). They basically need to fatten up and learn to breast/bottle feed in order to come home. The doctor said perhaps in another 10 days, before next weekend!! I couldn't be happier!!! I know that's not set in stone, but it gave me such hope and happiness. The nursery here is all ready, we're just missing the babies! There is so much more that I could say, but I am out of energy and I've already been crazy long winded, haha. It has been a tough week being a NICU mom who can't drive yet, but we're hanging in there. Here are my munchkins :)

So I have outside babies...part 1 (apparently I'm long winded)
It's taken me a little time to sit down and write this. I haven't had much time, and honestly it's taken some time to digest everything that has happened in the last two weeks. I shall start at the beginning.
One Tues Dec 30 H & I had just got home from a few days out of the city with his family for some holiday fun. I had a regular OB appt in the afternoon. The swelling had been slowly getting worse, I was really swollen in the lower half of my body, but also my hands and my face - the camera was not my friend this holiday season - hello double chin, please GTFO. My OB was late, as usual, I finally got called back and the nurse did my weight as always, I said I didn't want to know but she told me anyways, maybe she didn't hear me. Anyways, we go into the exam room and she says something like, "Did you notice you've put on a lot of weight recently?" I was ready to cry, already feeling super self conscious and now this. Um, it was the holidays, I'm 8 months pregnant and swollen as shit. My OB had said don't worry about the scale just eat healthy so that's what I had been doing. Anyways she left and I fought back tears - between the weight comment and the terrible pelvic pain and the lack of sleep, I was pretty emotional. OB comes in, does the usual routine. We get to the part where she usually tries to leave as quickly as possible, when she tells me she wants to send me to L&D to get assessed. She downplays it all, but says don't go home, go straight there and tell your H to meet you there. Don't panic, but your BP is up, there's protein in your urine and there's been substantial weight gain since my last appt (2 weeks before). Um, don't panic?? Yeah ok. So I left and called H like 7 times, his stupid phone went to voicemail - oh no wait, because we'd changed our phone plan earlier in the month, his VM wasn't even activated. I freaked out and called my mom bawling, she thankfully helped me calm down. I decided to come home, get a drink and a book, OB said it could be a few hours, and sorry, hospital parking is near impossible to find and expensive, and I live like 7 mins from the OB office, going WITH H was the only thing that might keep me calm, and since BP was a concern, that was kind of important.
I got home, tried in the least panicky way I could to wake him up (he was napping), tell him to get dressed, we need to go to L&D, but don't panic, everything is fine. We got there, the nurse was waiting for me, I was immediately stabbed with all the needles for bloodwork, had another pee test, got hooked up to the NST and answered a bunch of questions. The nurse looked at me, and literally said, the an empathetic look on her face, "Uh, I don't think you're going home tonight." She was really sweet the whole time. The on call OB came in and basically said I have preeclampsia and we should be prepared, they may need to deliver the babies that night. WTF? Seriously, wtf is happening right now?? I thought this was an assessment and now you're saying you may need to deliver my babies, tonight?? They were only 32 weeks, it was too early! It wasn't February, but shit, it wasn't even 2015 yet!! I was not ready to have 2014 babies. The OB reviewed my results, did a cervical check (holy fuck that hurt) and the plan was to repeat my b/w in 6 hrs to make a determination. We got moved to a room in L&D, I was put on the mag drip and saline, hooked up to a catheter. I was tied to all these machines, freaking the fuck out. My b/w came back looking a little better, so they wanted to basically just keep repeating it every 6hrs to monitor the preeclampsia. As long as I stayed stable enough, the babies could stay inside. My platelets were in a range that was basically just acceptable, if they dropped at all, we were looking at a very fast c section. Fortunately we made it through the night and I was able to get the first dose of the steroid to hep with the babies lung development. The new goal was to make it another 24hrs so that we could get the second shot in too. It works best if you can hold off 24-36hrs after receiving the second shot. We prayed for every extra hour, every extra day we could keep them cooking. That first full day there was hard, really hard. I couldn't get out of bed, I couldn't get comfortable in bed, I was afraid and yet trying to stay calm enough to keep my BP in check. It was the most terrifying week of my life. I just needed them to be ok. I needed them to hold on just a little longer. I needed my body to just hang in there, to hold on, stay stable and let them stay inside for as long as possible. I have never prayed so hard for anything in my life.
H could not have been a better partner through it all. He is seriously amazing and I am so grateful. He did everything for me. He brought me clothes and food, literally helped lift my very swollen legs in and out of bed, he helped me to the bathroom when I couldn't walk there, he kept me strong when I felt like crumbling. He is my everything (until the babies, that is!) and he did everything for me, and for our babies. He was my rock through all of this, and honestly some of it was not awesome and frankly rather embarrassing for me. I love this man more than I can say <3
So we held on. I stayed stable, and in hospital. We lived test to test to hear what the verdict was, knowing at any moment someone would inevitably say, "It's time for them to come out." My OB was on vacation, hadn't even sent over all my u/s results from previous scans, she dropped by to see me once before taking off. Have I mentioned on here how much I dislike her?? Anyways, so every day it was a new OB to meet and talk to. It was so hard to put any trust in any of them when we barely knew them, but what choice did we have? Until we met Dr. A that Friday, Jan 2. He is the high risk OB and chief of OB. He was amazing. He came in (he wasn't even in that day) just to talk to us. He was informative but reassuring, he really listened and answered our questions. He gave us a sense of calm, of understanding the plan, a plan we could agree with. He even said he would take a copy of his notes on us with him over the weekend so he could talk to the on call docs as scan results came in - he wanted me have daily u/s and b/w a few times a day. (P.s. holy shit my arms look like a serious junkie, they could barely find a vein, and many they tried were empty, so sometimes one blood draw took 4 stabbings).
Come Monday Dr. A was back. He wanted to come and actually be present at the u/s that day to see for himself. It was possibly the longest u/s ever, A/S included. He and his med student and the u/s tech just kept looking for all of the details that he wanted. After a while, he looks at me and basically said, "When did you last eat? We're going to need to go ahead and deliver" When we saw him back in my room after, he said that we were in an "urgent but not emergent" scenario. They basically wanted to look at scheduling and go from there. Dr. A actually cleared his schedule for the evening so that he could personally do my c section. (I seriously love this man). So I fasted all day and at 8pm, we were ready to go. They took me in, got me all ready before bringing H in. I was terrified, I won't lie. The OR is a scary place to be, I felt so exposed (and literally was) just lying there, the spinal scared the crap out of me, but I just kept reminding myself why we're doing this. I felt such relief when H came in, a familiar and loving face. And then we got started.
I think I have pushed the blogger limits, haha and I have run out of space. So, to be continued!

33 weeks - an unexpected victory
We made it. 33+1 in my books, 33 in my OB's (no idea why but whatever) and I never thought I'd be so surprised and grateful to say that. I've been in hospital since Dec 30, admitted with preeclampsia, it was an insanely intense and terrifying evening with a real possibility that babies would need to be delivered. Spoiler alert: they're still cooking!
On Tuesday afternoon I went for a regular appt at my OB's office, I really expected nothing exciting to happen, I hadn't even had a recent ultrasound. Evidently there have been some significant weight gain since my previous appointment, my blood pressure was elevated and they found protein in my urine. All of these signs led my OB to send me right over to the hospital to get checked out at L&D. I, of course, began to panic although she told me not to (yeah right). I went straight home and grabbed H (who had been sound asleep napping) and tried to calmly tell him we need to head to the hospital. How you can say that and not incite panic is beyond me.
When we got there they repeated the urine test ran some blood test and did an NST to see how the babies were doing. They asked about a whole bunch of other warning signs that I unfortunately had to say yes to; I wasn't experiencing them that day but I had in the last few weeks or month of my pregnancy. The nurse quite honestly looked at me and said, "I don't think you're going home." The on-call OB came over to see us and he very strongly tried to prepare us that the babies may in fact need to be delivered that night. It was terrifying and everything was moving so quickly our heads were just spinning. My lab work definitely supported the diagnosis of preeclampsia. They told me I would be admitted to the hospital so that I can be very closely monitored. That involved getting hooked up to the mag drip, saline fluids, bloodwork every six hours, the catheter, regular BP readings (bi-hourly) and continuous monitoring of the babies. Very fortunately, my condition stabilized and the babies continued to do well.
The next day was rough, I won't lie. I was hooked up to some many different cords and machines and I was really quite distraught over the quick and crazy turn of events. I just kept praying that these babies did NOT show up in 2014, that's not even the right year!! I'm supposed to have 2015 babies!! I had inquired about the steroid that helps babies lungs develop when they're likely to be delivered early, so we got the first dose of that in the morning of the 31st and then you have to wait 24 hours to get the second so we just kept praying that we made it to then. Ideally you want the last dose of the steroid to be administered at least 24 hours before delivery, so making it until Friday became a very big goal in our books. So we made it to 2015, huge victory, and then we made it to Friday, woo hoo!!
***continued on Saturday***
I got tied up doing a long NST last night so here we are, blogging on Sat night with inside babies still!!! Ok so where am I? My brain is so scattered, shocking right? We saw the high risk, chief of OB doctor (Dr. A) yesterday, he was awesome. I have to say all of the OBs have been super amazing. Taking their time to go through everything with us, make sure we understand what's happening and why, answer all our questions. Dr. A basically went through everything and we discussed how this is really all a balancing act - weighing my health and stability - BP, platelet count, other warning signs that the preeclampsia is revving up, against the babies well being and ability to thrive inside vs outside the womb. There is a decrease in their growth and blood flow from the placentas to the babies so I go for daily ultrasounds to ensure it doesn't get any worse. We are doing NSTs twice a day and checking their heart rates another two times a day. When any of these things change for the worse, the babies will be coming out via c section. So we basically are just in a wait and see pattern, praying for another day at a time.
This has taken me like 15 attempts to write so I'm just going to leave this here. Every day is a victory in my world, every day that they stay inside and we all stay healthy and stable is something to celebrate. I want to do everything I can to give them the best shot, whatever that means for me.
Babies, I hope you know how very much mommy and daddy love you. I can't wait to meet you but please don't rush out!! You are my heart and soul, you are a part of me in a way I can never fully describe. I love you and all I want is what is best for you. If you can just stay put a little while longer we'll all be that much better off, so please just keep cooking in there. I love you with every ounce of my being, with every part of me.
