Catching up

Catching up, haha, that's funny.  I never get caught up, I'm just always chasing the possibility!  Let me try to recap some of what's happened since the last time I remembered I have a blog :P

L&E are 9.5 months, 8 corrected.  They are doing amazing!  They have such distinct personalities, I am having so much fun with them.

L is a big boy, he's 17lbs,14oz and 69cm long.  He's huge, like for real.  He started crawling on Sept 22 and has been on the move ever since!  He is constantly pulling himself up to stand and has just started furniture surfing.  He loves his oatmeal, yogurt and fruit, mum mums and puffs.  He's hit or miss these days with his veggies, some meals are better than others.  He just got his third tooth this past Monday.  We're not yet sleeping through the night, though we've been told they no longer need to eat in the MOTN so we're going to try and wean off of that one.  I'm excited but afraid, haha.  L is such a happy little boy, except when he's teething.  His smile lights up a room, honestly, he smiles with his whole self and you can't help but smile back.  He has a fantastic laugh that I can't get enough of.  I love this little boy more than I can say, more than I imagined was ever possible.  I am so proud of him and how well he's doing.  We had our 8 month neonatal follow up appt yesterday and they were so happy with his progress!  It was so good to hear objective people rave about how well he's doing.  I am such a proud mama <3

E is the sweetest little girl.  She is incredible, she is my heart.  Well, half of it!  She is 15lbs,2oz and 68.5cm long.  She is strong and determined and smart.  Not to mention beautiful.  She started crawling on Sept 16 (happy anniversary mom and dad!).  She was so proud of herself, as were we!  Within a week she was pulling herself up to stand!  It was like she checked crawling off her list and was on to the next task!  She is a great eater, she'll try anything, just like her daddy!  She loves oatmeal, yogurt and fruit, sweet potato, squash - pretty much anything.  I'm pretty sure she's working hard on some teeth but none have popped through just yet.  And like L, not sleeping through the night yet.  She has on occasion, but far from consistent.  She is a bit more shy with people and wants to be with mom a lot, which is super sweet and I feel special but I also want her to come out of her shell, I want everyone to see how amazing she is.  She laughs a lot, which just makes me laugh along with her.  Yesterday morning she started really chatting with consonants, a very different kind of babbling than she had been doing before.  I swear these two learn and grow day by day.  I can't believe how much I love her, honestly, she is amazing.

I look over and see these two monkeys standing at their activity tables, crawling around and I can't help but be nostalgic.  Where did my tiny little babies go??  They're so big now, time seriously flies by so quickly.  They started out less than 4lbs and now, now they're these big kids, growing and laughing, learning new skills everyday.  I am so proud and so in love and so grateful to have them in my life, for the privilege to be their mom.  I have never before been so full of love and gratitude.

In and Out

On Friday L&E were 33 weeks and 4 days, exactly how long I was pregnant. They've officially been outside as long as they were inside!  This feels like a milestone, though I'm not sure it technically is one!  But I like silly pics so we commemorated the day. I can't believe how big they are, how much they've grown!

Milestones!

Big weekend in our household. My little monkey cut his first tooth!  I hope that explains some of the fussiness and it eases up now!  Please??  :)
And my beautiful little girl slept through the night!  It's a miracle!  My little monkey didn't, nor did I, lol, but she did!  Now the twin dilemma - one up both up vs let her sleep and see if this could become more than a one time fluke. Decisions, decisions!

{Insert clever title here}

My monkeys are 7 months old. They are doing amazing. They are pros at rolling over, they're starting to wiggle more - don't turn your back on E or she'll be under a coffee table or half way across the room before you know it!  They're loving solids - oatmeal and sweet potato are big hits but pears are a current fave. They're babbling and cooing and shrieking and laughing. They're looking at each other and reaching out, and flailing arms and legs too!  They're putting on weight like little champs.  We are mostly into 6 month clothes but some 3 and 3-6 stuff still fits, but not sleepers, these two are long!

And the other side of the amazing coin - I'm exhausted. Like insanely tired. I haven't had a good, uninterrupted night sleep in months, lots of months.  The monkeys really are going through phases with sleep. We were doing really well - bedtimes started finally getting easier, they'd wake once at 2-3am then up around 630-7am. It felt like progress!  Then we fell back into difficult bedtimes and up twice a night, if not more. It feels like a huge defeat. Like two steps forward, three steps back. I believe we'll get on the upswing again but holy crap I'm tired. I miss sleep. Like so much. Le sigh.

The other big struggle I'm having right now is that E basically refuses to nurse. It started with biting me, intertwined with some nursing. But holy hell it hurt, my poor nips!  I tried to persevere. I really wanted to continue our few nursing sessions a day. Now, I put her on the nursing pillow and she just starts crying and screaming. I hate it. I hate that she's seemingly decided she's done. I wasn't. I liked those times together. I wasn't ready to be done. It made sitting hooked up to a pump for 3hrs a day more worthwhile, or tolerable.  I feel rejected. And sad. Sad that I have two babies and no one will nurse. It's actually hitting me harder than I realized. And I don't know if it's crazy but it's coming at a time where a lot of stuff is coming back up for me about my labour and delivery experience and our NICU time.

I have two babies and I don't even know what a real contraction feels like. Never had my waters break. Never went into labour. I never got to feel the excitement of, "It's time!"  I had a week of terror and panic, worry and concern. Being poked with more needles and hooked up to more machines than I ever imagined. When it was go time I was terrified. Terrified that it was too soon, that they weren't ready. When they did arrive I got a peck on the cheek and they were gone. I waited 12hrs to hold my babies. I didn't get that initial skin to skin or breastfeeding, I didn't get that happy family moment of us all together, taking in this amazing thing that just happened. I prayed for my babies as they whisked them away. Then I spent a few more days battling to get my health problems under control. I struggled with needing to see doctors and have tests with the overwhelming desire to be in the NICU with my babies every minute. Which is what I wanted and tried to do for the next 25 days. I can honestly say I feel traumatized from this whole experience. I feel overwhelming gratitude for my two sweet babies. I am more in love than I ever dreamed possible. But lately I've had a flood of emotions coming back, usually when I lay in bed and try to fall asleep. I guess I'm just having a tough week and am feeling very emotional. I hate pumping. I hate it. I'm not sure if I hate it enough to stop yet but I hate it. And I hate that I've lost that time and closeness with E. It makes me really sad to think that chapter is over.

But I am happy and grateful for my monkeys who I love more than anything else. 7 months old and thriving and doing amazing. They are everything <3

Happy half birthday to my munchkins!

I made it 6 whole months!  For 6 months I have kept these two monkeys alive and well and thriving. Point me.

Seriously though, I don't even know how to put into words what this experience has been like. It's all encompassing, overwhelming, incredibly amazing, full of love and laughter, exhausting and trying, humbling and awe inspiring. I made these two perfect little people. I did this. With H and a whole lot of help, but I did this. I have never been prouder of anything. I am more in love not only with my children but also with my husband. My heart is so full I could burst. I feel so lucky and so grateful. I give thanks every day, many times a day, for these two miracles. It literally brings tears to my eyes on a regular basis. I blame hormones, obviously. ;)

L&E are amazing. L is all about rolling over. He won't stay on his back for more than a few minutes before he's flipped over, doing his on land swimming thing. It's adorable. He's going to be on the move in no time, I'm sure of it. He's found his voice this week. He's been laughing for months but he's just started to play some vocal acrobatics. Squealing with delight!  He's hilarious and almost always has a smile. Melts my heart every time. E is a Chatty Cathy. She is constantly talking, telling me stories, we actually go back and forth a little. She's found her laugh and I love it!  She's so much more smiley. Thank goodness for the end of the colic phase. God that was hard. They're both getting good at assisted sitting and E loves to stand. We went swimming for the first time this week and they did super well!  I'm a big swimmer so I'm glad we're off to a good start!  And they looked freaking adorable!  We have our 6 month appt tomorrow, I can't wait to get a weight check!

All in all, this is the best and hardest job ever but I'm beyond grateful to be able to do it. And I do have to say I'm also super proud of myself for making it 6 months BFing and pumping. L doesn't nurse, which makes me sad at times and E will, but only when she wants to. She knows what she wants and when. That's my girl!  Lol. But I honestly hate pumping. I seriously loathe it. But I'm proud that I hung in this long. I respect and support all methods of feeding the little ones, I use them all!  This was just a personal goal that I'm so stoked to have met. I hope to continue until end of summer and then I'll reevaluate. But for now, I'm allowing myself a moment to feel good about making it this far :)

Pics

No idea how the format is going to work cause I've never done this from my phone but here are a couple pics of the munchkins, and my first Mother's Day :)

Apparently I have a blog

Not that I've had time to update since...not sure and I doubt I have time to check. This is likely to be brief but I'll try to squish as much into a short post as possible.

Being a mom is hard. Like no joke, really hard. Having twins is insanity. I'm more exhausted than I ever dreamed possible. If you asked me right now what I want more than anything is say sleep - uninterrupted sleep. No babies to tend to no pumping to do, just sleep. God that sounds like a dream. I am in a state of pure exhaustion right now so I'm not promising to make much sense here. I live in a state of delirium. I'm constantly on repetition - feed babies, change diapers, pump, sterilize, make bottles - those last few things all while trying to keep two babies happy/sleeping/not crying. I am blessed to have an amazing mom and MIL who are here so much of the time to help me. I honestly don't know how I'd manage without their help. But it means there are always people here, in my space. It's also a reason I haven't had a chance to update much. My blog is private and I don't share it IRL so it's been tough to find a moment to myself, with quiet babies, where I'm not running around or attempting some sleep.

L&E are 4 months old and I can't believe it.  I honestly do not know where the time has gone. My constant state of exhaustion helps to blur the notion of day and time, lol. They are amazing. They are growing and changing so much. They're so much more inquisitive. E really looks at and analyzes her toys, L is the most smiley baby I've ever seen and his laugh just melts my heart. I can't believe how in love I am. I can't believe my heart hasn't exploded with the love I have for them. I knew I'd love them, but this kind of love is more incredible and all consuming than I could have imagined. There are now two pieces of my heart on the outside, that I can hold and hug and kiss and tickle. They are the most amazing thing I have ever done in my life. I am in awe and humbled that we made these two perfect little people.

That being said, I won't pretend this is easy or that it's some fairy tale. It's hard. The hardest and most relentless job ever. It's unending. There are no breaks, no time to clock out. It's all about them, all the time. And they have been challenging. My daughter is a spitfire - I called that when I was like 6 months pregnant. She challenges me pretty much every day. She has been a very fussy baby. She screams louder than I imagined possible!  She wants to be held almost all the time. She did not get the memo she's a twin. Clearly. She is just now starting to go for longer periods of time on her play at looking at her toys. But that's hit or miss, depending on her mood. L has always been so chill and laid back. Until the last two weeks where now he wants to be held all the time. He's not content just sitting or laying somewhere. It's a struggle to give them both everything they need all the time. I keep checking but I still only have the two arms. It's heartbreaking to have them both crying and upset and feeling helpless to make it better for both at the same time. And I hate having to choose who to comfort first.

I've had some real ups and downs. I've been challenged like never before. I've sobbed on the nursery floor begging them to stop crying. I've pleaded with them to stop screaming. I wish I had all the answers all the time but I don't. I'm learning to feed them both at once. I'm a better multitasker than you can imagine!  Some days, like today, I'm overwhelmed by all of this. How much I love them, how hard this is, how freaking exhausted I am with no prospect of 'catching up on sleep' anytime soon.

Being a mom is hard. Really hard. Beyond the most rewarding thing I've ever done - the way they smile at me or laugh, the sweet moments of pure love - it's incredible. But this shit is hard. Doubly hard. No, it's even more than that. God I miss sleep.

And that's all I've got time for. If anyone even still reads this sorry I'm the worst blogger ever. I hope to get back here more but that's up to the kids!  I don't know if I can post pics from my phone but I'll try to share a few recent ones. Not to brag but damn, we made some cute babies :)

Twin life is crazy

I have tried to write a post for a while now, but I either couldn't find the words or the time.  At some point I know I still need to unpack everything that brought me to this point.  I don't mean to over state, but I feel rather traumatized, quite frankly, when I start to think back to my hospital stay and health scares, the unexpected and terrifying arrival of the babies, being a NICU mom - it is all so much that I really haven't had a chance to process it all yet.  I'm worried that if I start down that road, the flood gates will just open and I may not be able to close them all that easily.  And honestly, I don't have that much time to myself these days.  But that will come later, for now, an update!

We have all been home together for 2 weeks and 3 days.  I can't believe that's it when I write it out, because it feels like much longer!  It has been one hell of an adjustment, that's for sure.  I have never experienced so many different emotions all at once.  I love being a mom.  I love L&E more than I can possibly comprehend or explain.  I am so deeply in love with these two little miracles.  I still can't believe we made them, they are ours and we are theirs.  I feel like the luckiest person in the world, my heart is so full of love it brings me to tears to even type that.  Two years we prayed for these babies, and now they're really here.  Sometimes I wake up (from the brief moments of sleep I get!) and I still can't quite believe it, I have to come downstairs and see them for myself, hold them and kiss them and tell them I love them.  Then it feels real.  Being a mom is what I have wanted more than anything, I feel privileged and honoured to be L&E's mom.  I just hope I can be everything they need and more, I want to be the best mom I can possibly be - they deserve that.

But it's not all sunshine and lollipops.  It's hard.  It's really, freaking hard.  We are on a 3hr schedule that looks something like this:

  • Bath, if it's bath day, i.e. they smell
  • Feed babies - BF one, bottle the other (H or one of our mom's does this), we bottle them both overnight though.  Feeding takes a long time, they're really still working on getting better and fast at this.
  • Diaper change
  • Settle them down (ha, this one is always fun!  They often alternate who's awake and fussing)
  • Pump
  • Wash pumping parts/bottles
  • Prepare bottles
  • with my last hour, eat/laundry/clean/sit down/shower/sterilize bottles and pumping stuff/nap

And then it starts all over again.  It.Is.Exhausting.  I have had moments of feeling like I'm doing a job, like I worked so hard to get these babies and I don't even get enough time to enjoy them.  I'm constantly feeding them then having to put them down so that I can pump to make sure I have enough for bottles.  I feel like I have so little time to actually spend enjoying them, especially since I'm trying to divide my time in two.  I've started making more of an effort to enjoy some cuddle time after I BF, but even then, I'm watching the clock because I need to pump, but I also need to pump early enough that I have time to refill before the next feed.

Which brings to me another thing that's stressing me out.  My supply.  I've been just keeping up with them, but without much extra, meaning very little wiggle room.  I really, really want to be able to provide for them.  I know logically that supplementing isn't a big deal, but emotionally and mentally, I am really hung up on being able to provide enough breastmilk to sustain them.  I couldn't get pregnant on my own, I couldn't stay pregnant or have the labour and delivery I wanted, I didn't get to bring my babies home right away - so little of this has gone the way I wanted it to, I just really want to be able to do this.  But the only way to manage this is to BF and pump like crazy.  So there really isn't much getting around the crazy schedule.  I can't even sleep more than 3 hours (usually it's more like 2) because then I need to empty my boobs, one way or another.  Oh sleep, how I miss you.  Like SO much I miss you.  One day, one day I think we will be reunited and it will be a glorious day.

I realize this post is probably really scattered, that's what sleep deprivation, a long over due post, and two babies starting to fuss because, guess what, that 3hr cycle is about to start over again, gets you.  A random rambling from a sleep deprived new mom who is both insanely in love with her babies, and exhausted and overwhelmed at just how hard all of this is.  Duty calls!  I shall leave you with a more recent pic of what makes this all worth while :)

This shit is hard

18 days. That's how old my babies are. It's also how long they've been in the NICU. I've been super busy running back and forth between home and the NICU that I haven't had much time to stop and think. Maybe that's for the best. Because today when I found a few moments to myself, the flood gates just opened. This is hard. Really, really hard. I am so head over heels in love with my two munchkins and it kills me that they're not here with me. I hate that every day, sometimes twice a day, I have to say good bye to them. I miss them the moment I leave and count the hours until I get to see them again. This is so much harder than I could have imagined. I just want my babies to be home with me.

So I have outside babies....part 2

I remember the moment I heard that first cry - it was the sweetest sound I have ever heard in my life.  They told H to stand up and he took a couple of pics, then the peds team took him to the side to clean him off and do the apgar test.  I craned my neck around to try and see them.  Then they called H to come over to take some pics, but the anesthesiologist quickly called him back because baby girl was making her debut!  It took a moment and then I heard her squack!  I swear she's my little bird, she makes the cutest bird like sounds that melt my heart.  They did the same thing, H took a pic and the peds took her aside.  I lay there just hoping I would get a chance to see them before they'd be whisked away to the NICU, knowing there was a very good chance that I might not.  Then the peds doc brings L over and I got to see him and give him a kiss, it was incredible to meet my son.  Then she took him back and brought E over and I got to give her a kiss.  I will cherish these moments forever.  I may not have got the labour and delivery I wanted, I may not have got my skin to skin, I may not have been able to snuggle them and BF right away - but at least I got to meet them before they went to the NICU and I went to recovery.

My mom came to be with me in recovery while I sent H to watch over the babies.  He texted updates and pics to me.  It was so hard not to be with them, but thank goodness for modern technology or I would have gone crazy!  I spent about 2hrs in recovery, then back to my room.  It was about to be a long night of wishing I was with them and counting the hours until that happened.  The next morning I had mores tests done and every moment felt like eternity waiting to get to the NICU.  When I finally got there, it was amazing to finally get to be with them.  We got to do our skin to skin and that was probably one of the very best moments of my life.  Holding E so close to me, I could feel my heart and soul just filling with more love than I could have ever imagined.  That was my daughter!  Then to look over and see my husband holding his son - be still my heart, I just couldn't be any happier.

The next couple of days were rough.  My preeclampsia worsened, my potassium levels were a mess, they were concerned about my kidneys, my BP was all over the place - it was kind of awful.  I felt awful and it was hard to spend as much time in the NICU as I wanted because they kept needing me for more tests.  After a couple of days, things finally started to improve, with my health, and with how much time I could spend with the babies.  I was finally on the road to recovery.

L&E are amazing.  They have been breathing on their own since birth (yay for longer cooking and steroids!).  They had a little jaundice, which wasn't a huge deal and is so common, but it meant they had to be under the phototherapy lights all day, which made it hard to snuggle them.  I also started pumping right away, but it was so tough trying to recover from my health issues and the c section, plus the fact I'm pumping and can't actually BF.  I'm not even going to get into the two least helpful NICU nurses who basically gave me grief about not producing enough milk on day 3 and how my babies are hungry and I need to pump exactly ever 3 hours so I'm doing it wrong.  It was all the stuff a newly post partum mom with babies in the NICU wants to hear.  Let's leave it there.

Anyways, today, they are 9 days old and doing amazing!  They have both now surpassed their birth weights, (E was 3lbs,7oz, and L was 3lbs,14oz).  They basically need to fatten up and learn to breast/bottle feed in order to come home.  The doctor said perhaps in another 10 days, before next weekend!!  I couldn't be happier!!! I know that's not set in stone, but it gave me such hope and happiness.  The nursery here is all ready, we're just missing the babies!  There is so much more that I could say, but I am out of energy and I've already been crazy long winded, haha.  It has been a tough week being a NICU mom who can't drive yet, but we're hanging in there.  Here are my munchkins :)

So I have outside babies...part 1 (apparently I'm long winded)

It's taken me a little time to sit down and write this.  I haven't had much time, and honestly it's taken some time to digest everything that has happened in the last two weeks.  I shall start at the beginning.

One Tues Dec 30 H & I had just got home from a few days out of the city with his family for some holiday fun.  I had a regular OB appt in the afternoon.  The swelling had been slowly getting worse, I was really swollen in the lower half of my body, but also my hands and my face - the camera was not my friend this holiday season - hello double chin, please GTFO.  My OB was late, as usual, I finally got called back and the nurse did my weight as always, I said I didn't want to know but she told me anyways, maybe she didn't hear me.  Anyways, we go into the exam room and she says something like, "Did you notice you've put on a lot of weight recently?"  I was ready to cry, already feeling super self conscious and now this.  Um, it was the holidays, I'm 8 months pregnant and swollen as shit.  My OB had said don't worry about the scale just eat healthy so that's what I had been doing.  Anyways she left and I fought back tears - between the weight comment and the terrible pelvic pain and the lack of sleep, I was pretty emotional.  OB comes in, does the usual routine.  We get to the part where she usually tries to leave as quickly as possible, when she tells me she wants to send me to L&D to get assessed.  She downplays it all, but says don't go home, go straight there and tell your H to meet you there.  Don't panic, but your BP is up, there's protein in your urine and there's been substantial weight gain since my last appt (2 weeks before).  Um, don't panic??  Yeah ok.  So I left and called H like 7 times, his stupid phone went to voicemail - oh no wait, because we'd changed our phone plan earlier in the month, his VM wasn't even activated.  I freaked out and called my mom bawling, she thankfully helped me calm down.  I decided to come home, get a drink and a book, OB said it could be a few hours, and sorry, hospital parking is near impossible to find and expensive, and I live like 7 mins from the OB office, going WITH H was the only thing that might keep me calm, and since BP was a concern, that was kind of important.

I got home, tried in the least panicky way I could to wake him up (he was napping), tell him to get dressed, we need to go to L&D, but don't panic, everything is fine.  We got there, the nurse was waiting for me, I was immediately stabbed with all the needles for bloodwork, had another pee test, got hooked up to the NST and answered a bunch of questions.  The nurse looked at me, and literally said, the an empathetic look on her face, "Uh, I don't think you're going home tonight."  She was really sweet the whole time.  The on call OB came in and basically said I have preeclampsia and we should be prepared, they may need to deliver the babies that night.  WTF?  Seriously, wtf is happening right now??  I thought this was an assessment and now you're saying you may need to deliver my babies, tonight??  They were only 32 weeks, it was too early!  It wasn't February, but shit, it wasn't even 2015 yet!!  I was not ready to have 2014 babies.  The OB reviewed my results, did a cervical check (holy fuck that hurt) and the plan was to repeat my b/w in 6 hrs to make a determination.  We got moved to a room in L&D, I was put on the mag drip and saline, hooked up to a catheter.  I was tied to all these machines, freaking the fuck out.  My b/w came back looking a little better, so they wanted to basically just keep repeating it every 6hrs to monitor the preeclampsia.  As long as I stayed stable enough, the babies could stay inside.  My platelets were in a range that was basically just acceptable, if they dropped at all, we were looking at a very fast c section.  Fortunately we made it through the night and I was able to get the first dose of the steroid to hep with the babies lung development.  The new goal was to make it another 24hrs so that we could get the second shot in too.  It works best if you can hold off 24-36hrs after receiving the second shot.  We prayed for every extra hour, every extra day we could keep them cooking.  That first full day there was hard, really hard.  I couldn't get out of bed, I couldn't get comfortable in bed, I was afraid and yet trying to stay calm enough to keep my BP in check.  It was the most terrifying week of my life.  I just needed them to be ok.  I needed them to hold on just a little longer.  I needed my body to just hang in there, to hold on, stay stable and let them stay inside for as long as possible.  I have never prayed so hard for anything in my life.

H could not have been a better partner through it all.  He is seriously amazing and I am so grateful.  He did everything for me.  He brought me clothes and food, literally helped lift my very swollen legs in and out of bed, he helped me to the bathroom when I couldn't walk there, he kept me strong when I felt like crumbling.  He is my everything (until the babies, that is!) and he did everything for me, and for our babies.  He was my rock through all of this, and honestly some of it was not awesome and frankly rather embarrassing for me.  I love this man more than I can say <3

So we held on.  I stayed stable, and in hospital.  We lived test to test to hear what the verdict was, knowing at any moment someone would inevitably say, "It's time for them to come out."  My OB was on vacation, hadn't even sent over all my u/s results from previous scans, she dropped by to see me once before taking off.  Have I mentioned on here how much I dislike her??  Anyways, so every day it was a new OB to meet and talk to.  It was so hard to put any trust in any of them when we barely knew them, but what choice did we have?  Until we met Dr. A that Friday, Jan 2.  He is the high risk OB and chief of OB.  He was amazing.  He came in (he wasn't even in that day) just to talk to us.  He was informative but reassuring, he really listened and answered our questions.  He gave us a sense of calm, of understanding the plan, a plan we could agree with.  He even said he would take a copy of his notes on us with him over the weekend so he could talk to the on call docs as scan results came in - he wanted me have daily u/s and b/w a few times a day.  (P.s. holy shit my arms look like a serious junkie, they could barely find a vein, and many they tried were empty, so sometimes one blood draw took 4 stabbings).

Come Monday Dr. A was back.  He wanted to come and actually be present at the u/s that day to see for himself.  It was possibly the longest u/s ever, A/S included.  He and his med student and the u/s tech just kept looking for all of the details that he wanted.  After a while, he looks at me and basically said, "When did you last eat?  We're going to need to go ahead and deliver"  When we saw him back in my room after, he said that we were in an "urgent but not emergent" scenario.  They basically wanted to look at scheduling and go from there.  Dr. A actually cleared his schedule for the evening so that he could personally do my c section.  (I seriously love this man).  So I fasted all day and at 8pm, we were ready to go.  They took me in, got me all ready before bringing H in.  I was terrified, I won't lie.  The OR is a scary place to be, I felt so exposed (and literally was) just lying there, the spinal scared the crap out of me, but I just kept reminding myself why we're doing this.  I felt such relief when H came in, a familiar and loving face.  And then we got started.

I think I have pushed the blogger limits, haha and I have run out of space.  So, to be continued!

33 weeks - an unexpected victory

We made it. 33+1 in my books, 33 in my OB's (no idea why but whatever) and I never thought I'd be so surprised and grateful to say that. I've been in hospital since Dec 30, admitted with preeclampsia, it was an insanely intense and terrifying evening with a real possibility that babies would need to be delivered.  Spoiler alert: they're still cooking!

On Tuesday afternoon I went for a regular appt at my OB's office, I really expected nothing exciting to happen, I hadn't even had a recent ultrasound. Evidently there have been some significant weight gain since my previous appointment, my blood pressure was elevated and they found protein in my urine.  All of these signs led my OB to send me right over to the hospital to get checked out at L&D.  I, of course, began to panic although she told me not to (yeah right).  I went straight home and grabbed H (who had been sound asleep napping) and tried to calmly tell him we need to head to the hospital. How you can say that and not incite panic is beyond me.

When we got there they repeated the urine test ran some blood test and did an NST to see how the babies were doing.  They asked about a whole bunch of other warning signs that I unfortunately had to say yes to; I wasn't experiencing them that day but I had in the last few weeks or month of my pregnancy.  The nurse quite honestly looked at me and said, "I don't think you're going home."  The on-call OB came over to see us and he very strongly tried to prepare us that the babies may in fact need to be delivered that night. It was terrifying and everything was moving so quickly our heads were just spinning. My lab work definitely supported the diagnosis of preeclampsia.  They told me I would be admitted to the hospital so that I can be very closely monitored. That involved getting hooked up to the mag drip, saline fluids, bloodwork every six hours, the catheter, regular BP readings (bi-hourly) and continuous monitoring of the babies. Very fortunately, my condition stabilized and the babies continued to do well.

The next day was rough, I won't lie. I was hooked up to some many different cords and machines and I was really quite distraught over the quick and crazy turn of events.  I just kept praying that these babies did NOT show up in 2014, that's not even the right year!!  I'm supposed to have 2015 babies!!  I had inquired about the steroid that helps babies lungs develop when they're likely to be delivered early, so we got the first dose of that in the morning of the 31st and then you have to wait 24 hours to get the second so we just kept praying that we made it to then. Ideally you want the last dose of the steroid to be administered at least 24 hours before delivery, so making it until Friday became a very big goal in our books.  So we made it to 2015, huge victory, and then we made it to Friday, woo hoo!!

***continued on Saturday***

I got tied up doing a long NST last night so here we are, blogging on Sat night with inside babies still!!!  Ok so where am I?  My brain is so scattered, shocking right?  We saw the high risk, chief of OB doctor (Dr. A) yesterday, he was awesome. I have to say all of the OBs have been super amazing. Taking their time to go through everything with us, make sure we understand what's happening and why, answer all our questions.  Dr. A basically went through everything and we discussed how this is really all a balancing act - weighing my health and stability - BP, platelet count, other warning signs that the preeclampsia is revving up, against the babies well being and ability to thrive inside vs outside the womb. There is a decrease in their growth and blood flow from the placentas to the babies so I go for daily ultrasounds to ensure it doesn't get any worse.  We are doing NSTs twice a day and checking their heart rates another two times a day.  When any of these things change for the worse, the babies will be coming out via c section. So we basically are just in a wait and see pattern, praying for another day at a time.

This has taken me like 15 attempts to write so I'm just going to leave this here.  Every day is a victory in my world, every day that they stay inside and we all stay healthy and stable is something to celebrate. I want to do everything I can to give them the best shot, whatever that means for me.

Babies, I hope you know how very much mommy and daddy love you. I can't wait to meet you but please don't rush out!!  You are my heart and soul, you are a part of me in a way I can never fully describe. I love you and all I want is what is best for you. If you can just stay put a little while longer we'll all be that much better off, so please just keep cooking in there. I love you with every ounce of my being, with every part of me.
